Exotic spice, dark fruit and floral notes provide a grand entrance for this dazzling Merlot. It’s balanced and structured with complexity, purity of fruit and miles to go before it wakes. Rich, luscious black Bing cherry and ripe black currant flavours mingle with espresso roast and notions of tobacco and anise. It’s full bodied and fully textured with a solid tannin underpinning and wonderful acidity through the persistent finish. Pillitteri Estates Viognier 2011

VQA Niagara Peninsula $15.00 12.5% alcohol 
What a difference a year has made, since last tasted, and not the only Pillitteri wine to have made great strides with just a bit more ageing. Orange blossom and honeysuckle aromas interweave with yellow pit fruit on the nose. It’s rich and flavourful with good mouth feel and a salad bowl of melon, peach and pear garnished with spice and excellent lemon acidity. The finish layers on a not-uncommon notion of grapefruit pith—good value. (Vic Harradine)

Winner of the trophy for ‘Best Red Wine of the Year’ at the recent All-Canadian Wine Championships, this red blend dishes up aromas of ripe black plum, baking spice and notions of dark juicy cherry. There’s a tsunami wave of flavour coating the palate with black currant, sweet ripe mulberry and sour cherry garnished with spice and roasted herbs. A gold-medal winner at Sélections Mondiales des Vins, this has a glorious nose of sweet spice, vanilla and notions of caramel. It washes over the palate with toasted, desiccated coconut, mixed spice and notions of lime yoghurt interwoven with apple and pear.
