Dezzani ‘La Guardia - Rosso’ Dolcetto, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon 2012
DOC Monferrato, Italy $16.25 13.5% alcohol
Two indigenous varieties—Dolcetto and Barbera—are joined by Cabernet Sauvignon, all hand harvested, in this stunning red blend. It’s terrific value and drinking well now. There’s good purity of fruit, deft balance and structure throughout. Sultry aromas of dark berry fruit, forest floor and incense set the table for a smorgasbord of flavour with red and black cherry interwoven with dark bittersweet chocolate. It’s mid-full bodied with gorgeous mouth feel and a long, lip-smacking aftertaste of dark fruit, mocha and oodles of charm. (Vic Harradine)
Dezzani ‘La Luna e Le Stelle’ Barbera d’Asti Superiore 2012
DOCG Barbera d’Asti, Italy $16.15 14.0% alcohol
This price-quality balance tips well in your favour. The low-yielding hand-harvested, 100% Barbera fruit underwent lengthy maceration before spending 12-14 months in barrique and bottle prior to release. Alluring aromas of charred toast, aromatic bitters and camp coffee interlaced with dark berry fruit unleash a smooth mellow wash of ripe black cherry and red licorice robed in mixed spice and excellent tang. It’s medium weight with persistent flavours replaying on the finish and aftertaste. This is quite delicious sipped on its own and perfectly paired with all manner grilled red meat. (Vic Harradine)
Dezzani ‘otto Bucce - Rosso’ Piemonte 2014
DOC Piemonte, Italy $12.85 13.5% alcohol
This punches well above the price, showcasing exceptional value, and is exceedingly consumer friendly. Predominantly Dolcetto – 68%, there’s a splash of other Piemonte-indigenous varieties—Barbera, Freisa, Bonarda, Albarossa along with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah… whew. ‘Otto Bucce’ translates to eight skins. Aromas of Asian spice, sweet vanilla and pipe tobacco introduce a tangy wash of pie cherry and lively red currant mingling with ripe juicy mulberry. It’s medium-plus bodied and satiny smooth with a mouth-watering finish. Pairs and pours well with spicy chicken tajine. (Vic Harradine)
Dezzani ‘Rosso Passito’ Appassimento Piemonte 2014
DOC Piemonte, Italy $21.30 13.5% alcohol
This is from the inaugural vintage of appassimento wine in Piemonte. This Recioto-like, Barbera/Dolcetto blend was harvested in November, dried under controlled conditions losing up to 50% of weight, primarily water, resulting in concentrated sugars and flavours—passito translates to raisin. This is another great example of a producer that consistently provides value at every price point. Aromas of prunes, figs and bramble berry jam abound. It’s chockfull of sweet, ripe flavour with kirsch liqueur and cassis mingling with warm spice and hints of blueberry tart. It’s medium-full bodied with generous texture and lengthy, fruity finish.
