Errázuriz ‘Late Harvest’ Sauvignon Blanc 2008
Casablanca Valley $13.95 (427054) 11.5% alcohol
While Sauvignon Blanc may be an unusual varietal for a late harvest wine, this example is a delightful one. Produced from eighten-year-old vines cultivated to encourage the development of Botrytis cinerea, it experiences a short period in seasoned French oak. It features an appealing and aromatic nose of sweet tree and stone fruit, with a touch of pink grapefruit. Medium bodied with a refreshing texture and lively acidity, it displays multidimensional lightly honeyed flavours of ripe citrus, tropical fruits and fresh apricots. Emiliana Novas ‘Winemaker’s Selection’ Chardonnay/Viognier/Marsanne 2007
Casablanca Valley $18.95 (63909) 15.0% alcohol
Here’s a heavyweight from this well-known producer of organically grown grapes. This golden wine has concentrated aromas of smoky oak, tree fruits and some floral notes. Rich, ripe and oaky, it’s full bodied and full flavored. The extended finish displays candy apple and caramel notes with a slight tang. Serve it with creamy pasta. (Susan Desjardins)
Montes Alpha Pinot Noir 2007
Leyda Valley $19.95 (143214) 14.0% alcohol
With only 60% of the fruit aged in French oak, this classy mid-weight Pinot displays delicious aromas of strawberries, red cherries, spicy oak and earth. It has a refreshing, but smooth texture complemented with ripe red berry flavours. It’s nicely structured with lively acidity and soft tannin. The bright fruit flavours and notes of spice and pepper carry through on the appealing finish. Enjoy it now with veal or pork, or cellar for a few years. (Susan Desjardins)
Casa Lapostolle Merlot 2008
Rapel Valley $16.95 (405712) 14.5% alcohol
Intense violet purple coloured and quite expressive, this Merlot has great aromas of dark fruit, fresh herbs and spice. It has focused flavors of ripe dark berries, plums and spice, nicely balanced fresh acidity and moderate tannin. This is medium-full bodied with an extended mouth filling finish. Tabalí ‘Reserva’ Merlot 2006
Limari Valley $14.95 (093740) 14% alcohol
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) The nose is chock full of fruit with cassis, black plum, blueberry and red cherry all surrounding a splash of vanilla. The ripe fruit flavours continue through the palate with refreshing acidity and very soft tannins creating a juicy feel in the mouth. This is full bodied, fruit forward and fun, and enjoyable on its own or with braised veal. (Mark Tandan)

Emilio Lustau ‘East India Solera’ Sherry
DO Jerez, Spain $16.95 (713636) 375 mL
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) When you see "Lustau" on a wine, it’s akin to a gold seal of approval. This perennial favourite is showing toffee, raisin and caramel on the nose coupled with a most scrumptious mélange of sweet fig, raisin and nutty flavours. Dense and intense, deftly balanced, the effect is amazing. Serve this dessert wine chilled; either on its own or matched to crème caramel, crème brûlée or any manner of dark spiced fruit cake. Stock up and drink over the next two years. (VH)

Dopff au Moulin Crémant d’Alsace ‘Cuvée Julien’ Brut Non-Vintage
AOC Alsace $18.95 (641365) 12.0% alcohol
This lively sparkling wine from France is a blend of Pinot Blanc and Pinot Auxerrois produced by méthode traditionelle, as are the classic wines of Champagne. In this case, the producer has been making Crémants since the late 1500s. This pale gold gem has a subtle toasty, leesy nose with a fine fresh mousse and attractive juicy flavours of pears and soft citrus. It’s very refreshing with a mid-length crisp finish. Cattail Creek Chardonnay 2008
VQA Four Mile Creek $14.95 (168039) 12.5% alcohol
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Deftly oaked, this is an interesting blend of Chardonnay and Chardonnay Musqué. Delightful aromas spring from the glass—floral notes, sweet tropical and tree fruits, and a hint of toast. Ripe apple and pear flavors are matched with a refreshing seam of citrusy acidity. This is medium bodied and supple with a crisp lingering finish. It’s nicely balanced and pairs well with escalope of pork tenderloin. (Susan Desjardins)
Henry of Pelham ‘Reserve Off-Dry’ Riesling 2007
VQA Short Hills Bench, Niagara Escarpment $15.95 (557165) 11.5% alcohol
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Heady aromas of zesty citrus, crisp green apple and hints of spicy ginger waft from this well-balanced and fully textured white. Racy citrus, ripe pineapple and lemon chiffon pie flavours bathe the palate throughout. There’s wonderful balance between the sweet fruit flavour and the excellent moderating acidity. Pair with coquilles St. Jacques or a creamy cheese like Brie. (Vic Harradine)
Peninsula Ridge Estates ‘Reserve’ Chardonnay 2007
VQA Niagara Peninsula $24.95 13% alcohol
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Vanilla and smoky notes on the nose provide segue for the delicious and persistent stream of fruit-filled flavours with white peach, spiced green apple, racy mouth-watering citrus and ripe tropical fruit to the fore along with nuances of hazelnuts. The ten months oak ageing is well integrated, the texture smooth as satin and the finish deftly balanced and lingering. It’s a dazzling expression of the varietal and the wonderful ’07 vintage in Niagara. (Vic Harradine)

(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Expressive aromas of toasty oak, aromatic bitters and spiced dark berry fruit waft from this tasty number. It’s well balanced and brimming with flavour—ripe black juicy cherry and zesty spiced black plum. The tannins are ripe, silky and perceptible, adding structure and interest. Megalomaniac ‘Pink Slip’ Pinot Noir Rosé 2008

(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Floral and spice on the nose, the flavour profile includes freshly sliced strawberry and plum compote. Snoqualmie ‘Naked’ Chardonnay 2008
Columbia Valley $16.95 (158501) 13.5% alcohol
Produced from organically-grown grapes in a certified organic facility and aged in stainless steel, this wine offers intense and attractive aromas of rich orchard fruit with an almost tropical note. It’s round, silky and fruit forward—ripe peach and pear predominate. Mouth filling, it has fine acidity and a mid-length slightly sweet finish. It’s quite reasonably priced and ideal for white meat dishes or spicy foods. (Susan Desjardins)

Dry Creek Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Dry Creek Valley, California $23.95 (642207) 14.5% alcohol
Primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, this impressive wine includes small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Opaque, almost inky, the wine lives up to the promise of its hue with complex aromas and flavours of menthol, earth, cassis, and ripe red berries. While fruit forward, it has quite firm tannin and moderating acidity. It’s robust with a very persistent finish along with lovely nuances of dark chocolate and spicy oak. A candidate for cellaring up to 7 years, it’s also a perfect match to rare roasted or grilled red meat. (Susan Desjardins)
La Crema Pinot Noir 2008

Lovely aromas of ripe field berries and cherries waft from the glass of this semi-transparent ruby wine. It has rich ripe spicy fruit flavours, soft texture, fine acidity and gentle tannin. Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Sonoma County $19.95 (226944) 13.8% alcohol
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Earthy, toasty with hints of black licorice on the nose, this delivers a lovely rendition of lip-smacking Cab. Cassis, ripe mulberry and black plum compote on the mid palate, it finishes in a blaze of glory with chocolate-dipped cherry and red currant flavours. It’s mid weight, smoothly textured with well-integrated ripe tannin. Delicious on its own, it also pours well alongside herb- and garlic-rubbed grilled rack of lamb. (Vic Harradine)

Chakana ‘Yaguareté Collection’ Malbec 2009
Mendoza $12.95 (3509) 14.0% alcohol
Deep red with a violet hue, this is an intensely fruit-forward wine exhibiting lashings of dark berries and plums. The fruit flavours match the aromas and are balanced with some fresh acidity and soft tannin. Medium bodied and approachable, it’s consistent through the mid-length finish, which has an attractive hint of char. Great with pizza or barbequed hamburgers, it earned an extra ½ star for value – a few bottles won’t go amiss. (Susan Desjardins)
La Posta ‘Angel Paulucci Vineyard’ Malbec 2007
Mendoza $15.95 (75515) 13.5% alcohol
This wine is inky black and dense, delivering lifted aromas of black plum, fig compote and dark berries. It’s richly flavoured, ample and nicely balanced with fresh acidity and firm tannin. The ripe dark fruit carries through the mid-length finish, complemented with spicy chocolate notes. Good value – drink it now! (Susan Desjardins)
Santa Julia ‘Reserva’ Bonarda 2008
Mendoza $13.95 (141366) 13.5% alcohol
Bonarda is one of the most planted varietals of Argentina, possibly related to the Italian grape Dolcetto or Charbono, transported here by Italian immigrants. This example is highly extracted and inky with forceful aromas of dark fruit, sweet spice and vanilla. It’s fruit forward with some attractive chocolate and herbal notes. Medium bodied and generous, it has great balance of fruit, acidity and tannin on a satisfying and mouth-filling finish. An extra ½ star for value. (Susan Desjardins)

Wynns ‘Coonawarra Estate’ Riesling 2008

Look no further for a classic ageable Riesling with lovely floral, stone fruit and light petrol aromas. The palate displays some spritzy minerality, crisp acidity and flavours of green apple and ripe citrus. It has a persistent crisp bright fruit finish. A great match for pork or white fish. Alkoomi Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
Frankland River $19.95 (904227) 14.0% alcohol
Deep ruby red, this wine has classic Cabernet aromas of cassis, cedar, dark berries and herbs and spice. It has powerful dark fruit flavours along with notes of dark chocolate, char, herbs and earth. Frankland River, Western Australia $19.95 (090282) 14.5% alcohol
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Mellow, round and very approachable, you’ll find perfumed aromas of roasted herb, spice and plum on the lifted nose. Damson plum, ripe black Bing cherry and cassis flavours all make an appearance on the medium-bodied nicely textured palate. There’s a fruit bowl of berry fruit flavours and a generous dollop of tang on the lingering finish. Drink now to 2014 with rack of lamb. (Vic Harradine)
Lindemans ‘Reserve’ Merlot 2007
Limestone Coast $14.95 (588715) 13.5% alcohol
A bright ruby red, this fine Merlot has attractive aromas of plum, cherry and spice. The flavours are ripe black cherry and dark berries with hints of pepper, char and spice. It’s mid-weight with soft texture and acidity plus some warmth on the palate. Nicely balanced and approachable, it’s a well-priced value-packed red. (Susan Desjardins)

A semi-transparent pale crimson, this is emphatically a European-style Pinot! It displays aromas and flavours of bright red cherry and strawberry with some earthiness and spice. It’s light-medium bodied with bright acidity, some minerality and silky tannin. The mid-length finish is vibrant and refreshing with a lovely replay of the red berry flavours. Can’t say enough about this unusual varietal rarely seen out of its home region of Piemonte, Italy. This very approachable wine has subtle floral and stone fruit aromas with a hint of hazelnuts. Floral, tropical and stone fruit plus spicy aromas waft from the glass. It’s medium-full bodied and characterized by ripe fruit, spice and balancing acidity on the palate. Fontcraine Morgon 2007

This is emphatically not your everyday wine from Beaujolais, Morgon is from one of the special Cru areas, known for its structure and ability to age. It’s a semi-opaque crimson red and displays both red fruit aromas and savoury notes. Dry and medium bodied, it has nuances of earth, spice and licorice with underlying red berries. This blend of Syrah, Grenache, old vine Carignan and Mourvèdre is an award-winning red. Extracted and an opaque inky color, it has tremendous aromatic intensity and offers an enticing array of aromas—dark fruit, earth, smoke, spice and garrigue. It has a core of ripe dark berry fruit and attractive notes of Provence spices, especially bay leaf. Firm tannin and moderate acidity match the powerful fruit. Full bodied, it has a generous extended finish. Serve with a hearty stew or cellar for a few years. (Susan Desjardins)
Domaine Galévan ‘Paroles de Femme’ Côtes du Rhône 2007
AOC Côtes du Rhône $15.00 (125930) 14.5% alcohol
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Susan loved this wine, as well, having tasted at the winery. You’ll go a long way to beat this price-quality ratio—load up the trunk. The perfumed nose delivers savoury herb, dark berry and plum jam aromas while the palate is washed in full-bore fruit flavours of warm sweet kirsch liqueur, succulent Bing cherry and spiced black plum. Full bodied and silky smooth, it’s surprisingly well balanced with enough structure and moderating acidity to keep it on track and enjoyable, glass after glass. It’s perfect for backyard barbies and on into winter with heartier meats and stews. (Vic Harradine)

Tsantali ‘Rapsani’ 2006
AOQS Thessaly $12.95 (163931) 13.5% alcohol
Ripe berry and red plum aromas are underlaid with earthy minty herbal notes. The fruit flavours carry through on the palate which also displays some oak aging in the spicy notes and hint of caramel. It’s medium bodied and has definite texture and structure, but is nicely rounded and very approachable. An appealing wine, it has characteristics of Greek olive oil – very well made and very modestly priced. An extra ½ star for value. (Susan Desjardins)

Rivera Cappellaccio Aglianico ‘Riserva’ 2004
DOC Castel del Monte $17.95 (984120) 13.5% alcohol
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) This could also be on the short list for best value wine in the release. Fig paste and cassis fruit intermingle with dark chocolate and pepper notes on the inviting nose. Moderate acidity combines with big, chewy tannins to provide ample structure. This medium-bodied red carries a long finish of dried fruit and can be enjoyed tonight and over the next seven years with grilled steak. (Mark Tandan)
Renzo Masi Chianti ‘Riserva’ 2006
DOCG Chianti $14.95 (969469) 13.5% alcohol
Dark, almost opaque, this classic Chianti blend (Sangiovese, Colorino, Canaiolo) offers alluring floral, red fruity and spicy oak aromas. Aged 2 ½ years in barrel and bottle, it’s medium-full bodied with firm tannin, fresh acidity and spicy cherry and toasty oak flavours. It’s well structured with an enjoyable persistent finish. Tedeschi 'Capitel Dei Nicalo' Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2004

(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Tedeschi is a premium producer of Amarone. What a bargain this is—you get an Amorone-like wine for one third the price. It's rich, rustic and robust. Look for aromas and flavours that are expressive, even a touch feral—spicy cherry, incense-infused plum, aromatic bitters, portobello mushroom—and absolutely scrumptious. The dry, lengthy finish puts icing on the cake with more ripe berry fruit flavours. Stock up. (Vic Harradine)

Symington Family Estates ‘Altano’ 2007
DOC Douro $11.95 (579862) 13.0% alcohol
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Two premium Port grapes coalesce to fashion this rich and rustic red. The nose is earthy and chockfull of mixed spice while the palate is treated to a well-balanced wash of concentrated fruit flavour with spice cake, ripe mulberry and red cherry predominant. Medium weight and nicely textured, the tannins are ripe and the moderating acidity nicely handled. Hard to find much better at this price; pick up a few and pour it with burgers, pizza or grilled gourmet sausage over the next couple of years. (Vic Harradine)

Cattail Creek Estate Winery ‘Serendipity’ Rosé 2009
VQA Niagara-on-the-Lake $14.20 11.5% alcohol
This attractive rosé is composed primarily of Pinot Noir and Gamay—harvested from vines planted in the 1980s—with a touch of Merlot. Produced in the traditional saignée method, it was fermented and aged in stainless steel. It's a light cherry pink with sweet berry aromas, bright acidity and full cherry berry flavours complemented with mineral notes. Displaying the red berry flavours of its principal components on the fresh finish, it’s well priced, versatile and a great patio sipper or well matched to spicy food or sushi. (Susan Desjardins)
Knappstein ‘Enterprise Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Clare Valley, Australia $29.95 (932160) 14.5% alcohol
Inky-coloured and very aromatic, this opens with a complex nose of dark berry fruit, chocolate and spice. It’s mid weight, nicely textured and delivers a balanced savoury mouthful of cassis, black plum and tangy Bing cherry mingling with polished tannin and lip-smacking acidity—cool-climate Clare throughout. A lovely wine to sip on its own now and on to 2015, it pairs well with herb-rubbed oven-roasted rack of lamb. (Vic Harradine)

Nicely perfumed aromas—mocha, nuances of licorice and dark field berry—segue a palate-coating wash of flavour with ripe mulberry, racy red cherry and spiced black plum galore. This is a nicely balanced drink-me-now red with tannins fully resolved and the oak well integrated, The finish layers on hints of espresso roast. Produced from a blend of fairly equal quantities of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot, this is a lovely rosé with ripe berry flavours and aromas—cherry and raspberry—along with underlying notes of mineral and graphite. It’s medium bodied, nicely textured and well balanced with a velvety underpinning of smooth ripe tannin. The zesty finish is mouth watering with a shower of red currant and ripe cranberry. Nyarai Cellars Sauvignon Blanc 2009

Nyarai means "be humble" in the Shona dialect of Southern Africa, but winemaker Steve Byfield's Sauvignon Blanc is anything but. The 2008 vintage, Nyarai's first with this grape, won a bronze at the Ontario Wine awards. This has a stunning nose of fresh cut grass and herbs with a mouth-watering lemon/lime taste that lingers pleasantly in the mouth. With only 300 cases produced, this is a rare delight.
