Winecurrent

June 6, 2009 Vintages Release

This Vintages release and winecurrent newsletter begins with a feature on wines from various appellations in Burgundy followed by a timely feature on Rosés from around the world. The familiar country/region format follows in the 'Main Release' with wines reviewed in the order they appear in the Vintages Release brochure.

Other highlights in this winecurrent newsletter include:
  • Challenge – rather than focusing on the price and stars from your favourite countries and regions, read the reviews from hitherto unexplored areas and purchase a couple that read like the type of wine you enjoy. It may open an entire new window to your wine world!
  • Opportunity – following the main release are wines available from varied sources. It’s an opportunity to expand your purchasing landscape discovering well-priced quality wine of which you might not otherwise be aware.
  • Responsibility – the law in Ontario regarding the legal alcohol limit when driving recently became less tolerant. To learn about it and arm yourself with valuable tips from the LCBO for responsible party hosting and attendance plus valuable tips in making your child’s Prom night a safe one, read Caring for Yourself and Others.

Quinta de Ventozelo Douro Tinto Reserva 2003
DOC Douro $22.95 (021329)
(Previously reviewed in winecurrent) Like many good Portuguese reds, this wine is a blend of the premium grapes used in Port, and this house is a premium Port producer. There's no shortage of aromatics here with red cherry fruit, vanilla and sweet spices alongside a hint of menthol. It hails from a very hot climate, developing low acidity, but big ripe tannins give it nice balance and the fruit flavours linger nicely. This is a natural choice for rare beef filet tonight or braised lamb shanks in another 5 years. (MT)
