- Please welcome, Lindsay Groves. Lindsay Groves (LG) joins winecurrent in this issue as a reviewer. Passionate and particular, Lindsay’s career is focused on wine. She graduated from oenology and viticulture at Niagara College and has worked at wineries in France and South Africa as well as at home. She continues her studies with the Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET), London, soon to begin studies for the Master of Wine qualification. Lindsay is a certified sommelier, has worked at fine dining establishments in Toronto—including Via Allegro, boasting one of the world’s best wine cellars—and was recognized as ‘Ontario Sommelier of the Year’ in 2007 by the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation. In 2008 she was highlighted as one of the ‘Top 30 Under 30’ by the Ontario Hostelry Institute. Recently Lindsay decided to turn her attention to wine writing and in July, 2008 she was published by her idol, Jancis Robinson. She is also an associate of acclaimed sommelier and Toronto personality, Zoltan Szabo.
Lindsay believes that wines should be judged on individual merit rather than their price, reputation or prestige. What matters most is the hedonistic value; wine should be evaluated on the amount of pleasure it gives to the imbiber. As such, scoring is only of use insofar as the reviewer’s taste is in accordance with that of the reader. Lindsay feels that wine is a living substance, and should be respected and treated holistically—as a regular part of life that also includes the food, places and people that surround it. Santé!

There’s balance and depth, but it needs four years in the cellar before opening. Drink 2012 to 2017. (VH)
