Trius ‘Traditional Method’ Brut Rosé
VQA Niagara Peninsula $32.95 (184309) 12.0% alcohol
As with most Trius wine, this is quite good. It’s flavourful, balanced, refreshing and offers a good price point when one considers the quality within. Alluring aromas of red berry fruit and leesy notes mingle with citrus on the nose of this deftly balanced sparkler. It dazzles the palate with strawberry and raspberry fruit flavours robed in piquant spice and excellent tang. The fine-bead bubbles and lengthy flavour-filled, lip-smacking finish speak to high-quality sparkling wine. A perfect welcoming wine to offer company. (Vic Harradine)

Marie-Pierre Manciat Brut Crémant de Bourgogne Non-Vintage
AOC Crémant de Bourgogne $24.95 (402362) 12.5% alcohol
This traditional-method sparkling wine from southern Burgundy entices the nose with caramel apple, lemon zest and toasty biscuit notes from time spent on its lees in the bottle. It has a generous palate of zesty citrus, ripe apple and brioche leading to a long, full and frothy finish. A good value Crémant, it’s well balanced with lively acidity and a delicate effervescence. Fielding ‘Unoaked’ Chardonnay 2016
VQA Niagara Peninsula $14.95 (164491) 12.5% alcohol
Appealing aromas of green apple, pear, peach and citrus notes with notions of honeysuckle and spice precede nicely-textured palate-bathing flavours of red apple, lemon peel and beeswax. Dry and medium bodied, it’s creamy smooth and nicely textured due to time spent on its lees. Well balanced with refreshing acidity, it finishes mid-plus length with a pleasant mineral aftertaste. Pair this mouth-watering, exceptional-value chardonnay with chicken breast in a Dijon-tarragon cream sauce. (Lisa Isabelle)

Redstone ‘Limestone Vineyard’ Sauvignon Blanc 2016
VQA Twenty Mile Bench $24.95 (121648) 12.0% alcohol
Sandalwood, lime and mineral notes abound on the nose of this medium-weight, generously textured riesling. It coats the palate with grapefruit pith, bracing lime tang and nuances of oak; this was aged eight months in French oak barrels. The finish reveals more flinty minerality while the aftertaste showcases a crisp, clean and refreshing character. Pour alongside a deli platter, crab cakes or fish tacos. (Vic Harradine)

Southbrook Vineyards ‘heather’s home vineyard’ organic Riesling 2017
VQA Vinemount Ridge $22.95 (650135) 11.2% alcohol
This is certified organic and suitable for vegans and vegetarians. There are aromas of pit fruit, citrus and mineral notes on the nose of this tang-laden riesling. It streaks over the palate with a laser-like, electrifying line of stony minerality, racy lime juice and green pear. This is medium weight with oodles of nerve and verve from twist top to last drop. It’s dry on the finish and pairs exceptionally well with sushi or freshly shucked oysters. (Vic Harradine)

Henry of Pelham ‘Family Tree – Red’ 2016
VQA Ontario $18.95 (247882) 13.5% alcohol
This eclectic red blend—32% syrah/30% merlot/18% cabernet sauvignon, 15% cabernet franc, 5% baco noir—gives up aromas of charred toast and smoke, mixed spice and flecks of dark cherry/berry fruit, It glides over the palate with great aplomb showcasing delicious palate flavours of black briary berry and blueberry intertwined with excellent tang and a lip-smacking aftertaste. This sips nicely on its own and pours exceptionally well with grilled red meat. (Vic Harradine)

Catena ‘High Mountain Vines’ Chardonnay 2017
Mendoza $19.95 (918805) 13.0% alcohol
This wine has a light, bright-gold colour with an entertaining nose of buttered popcorn, peach, and slight tropical notes reminiscent of banana. The winery only allows some of the wine to undergo malolactic fermentation, giving a full-bodied and creamy mouthfeel while retaining a good balance of tart acidity. Flavours of pear and granny smith apples linger pleasantly in the finish. Enjoy this wine with sautéed, buttered Haddock. (Dave Isaacs)

Bodega Toneles ‘Tonel 46 – Reserva’ 2015
Uco Valley, Mendoza $17.95 (629808) 13.5% alcohol
The price-quality ratio skews well in your favour, pick up a few. It was fermented in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts then matured in used French-oak barrels. This is dark plum, almost opaque in colour with a nose delivering aromas of damp leaves, smoke, ash, and dried fruit. It’s medium-full bodied on the palate with a moderate amount of tannins and juicy balance of fruit and acidity. There are flavours of cherry and vanilla, with some background sensations of dried herbs, and a long tart and fruity finish. This is drinking very well right now and will do so for the short-medium term. Enjoy with lasagna. (Dave Isaacs)
South Africa: White Wine
• The following 2015 Waterkloof ‘Circle of Life’ is a blend of 72% sauvignon blanc/28% chenin blanc that was hand harvested, hand sorted and sourced from organic/biodynamic vineyards before being whole-bunch pressed and co-fermented in large oak barrels. It underwent a six-month fermentation and lengthy bottle maturation before release. No acids or enzymes were added.

Waterkloof ‘Circle of Life’ 2015
WO Stellenbosch, South Africa $19.95 (284588) 13.5% alcohol
Alluring aromas of lime, herbal notes and honeydew melon abound. A medium-bodied, silky-smooth textured river of balanced-on-a-pin flavours blanket the palate with blood orange, lemon curd and lip-smacking minerality. This showcases good depth and complexity, persistent purity of fruit, a lengthy finish and a double helping of flavourful charm and pizzazz. Sip on its own or alongside sole meuniere. (Vic Harradine)

Château Peyrabon 2015
AOC Haut-Médoc $28.95 (10538) 13.0% alcohol
This left-bank red blend —63% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, 3% cabernet franc, 2% petit verdot is hand harvested and aged in traditional Bordeaux oak barriques, 25% new, for 14 months. The nose, discrete at first, opens up on dark fruits, sweet smoke, green bell pepper and baking spice. Ripe black cherry, black plum and tangy raspberry flood the palate with a velvety gush of flavours. This medium-bodied red offers freshness, fine tannins and a medium-long fruity and spicy finish. Gérard Bertrand Fitou Grenache/Carignan 2017
AOP Fitou, France $17.95 (403683) 13.0% alcohol
A shy nose of red and dark berry fruit, spice and herb aromas set the table for a medium-bodied, creamy smooth flow of tangy red currant and pie cherry nicely interlaced with sweet black plum and a hint of mixed herbs. This is light on its feet with sense of purpose, good balance and food-friendly characteristics. Give this a go with burritos, wings, doner kebabs, pizza or burgers. (Vic Harradine)

• Fruit for the following 2013 Banfi Brunello Di Montalcino was sourced from 100% estate-grown, select-clone sangiovese on the southern hills of Montalcino grown at +200m above sea level. It was fermented 10-12 days, matured 2 years in French oak then kept in bottle until released in the fifth year after harvest.

Lively spice, earthy notes and savory herbs waft from this creamy-smooth, generously textured gem. This showcases persistent purity of fruit, structure, skillful balance and a lengthy finish. A medium-full bodied flow of palate-bathing flavour—ripe juicy black raspberry, red currant and crunchy pie cherry—mingle with excellent tang and acidity and soft supple tannin with all replaying on the dry, lengthy finish. Sweet cherry and crushed raspberry aromas meld with notes of violet, baking spice and herbs on the nose of this sangiovese-dominant red. Dry and medium-full bodied with enough acidity to balance, cherry, plum, coffee and dried herb flavours appear on the palate. This punches well above its weight and is value laden. Fresh, lively aromas of charred toast, red berry fruit and sharp spice leap from the glass. It envelops the palate with stunning, balanced and beautiful flavours—ripe black Bing cherry, briary berry and mocha melding with notions of herbal notes and excellent tang. This is medium-plus bodied with generous texture and persistent purity of fruit throughout. It finishes delicious, balanced and full of flavour. Pour with rack of lamb, grilled medium rare. There are fresh, lively aromas of dark berry fruit, espresso roast and mixed spice galore. It captures the palate with a flavourful surge of piquant, spice-infused blueberry and black currant balanced by tangy pie cherry. Seghesio Sonoma Zinfandel 2017

Zinfandel has over 100-years of history at the Seghesio estate. Traditionally they add a dash of petite syrah to their zinfandel wines, this is no exception. Look for aromas of cassis, wet moss and cherry on the nose. The palate is full bodied with a pleasantly juicy tartness and approachable tannins. There are a lot of vegetal characteristics on the nose of this wine along with aromas of celery and parsnip mingled with typical aromas of cut grass. The palate offers a medium-bodied mouthfeel with crisp acidity and flavours of pear and lemon fading to a hint of lemon zest in the finish. This gamay/pinot noir blend offers subtle aromas of strawberry and red cherry before dazzling the palate with a rush of tang-infused ruby red grape grapefruit interlaced with freshly sliced strawberry and notions of cherry cordial. Plantings of Albariño, a Spain and Portugal grown varietal, are booming in the California Central Valley to a point that some nicknamed it Calbariño. This one is certified organic and sustainable and shows a lovely nose— freshly squeezed lemon, ripe pineapple, mineral notes and a wisp of grass. It’s deliciously fresh and crisp on the palate with a repeat of the aromas in juicy and mouth-watering flavours. Expect a tropical fruit and saline finish for this medium-bodied gem enjoyable on its own or perfect when served with fried calamari. (Louise Boutin)

This attractive deep-ruby-robed organic beauty teases the senses with aromas of freshly crushed raspberry, ripe plum, black tea and a note of star anise. Grippy at first, the juicy flow of ripe berry turns mellow, tagging along flavours of plum compote, ginger snap cookie and slate minerality that builds on the palate to a complex, lengthy, dry generous finish. This is deftly balanced with oodles of flavour and a long aftertaste. Aromas of rich ripe tropical fruit and wisps of citrus provide entry to a rich, ripe and raring to go, balanced wash of red apple, ripe Bosc pear and notions of grilled pineapple persisting through the lengthy finish and aftertaste. This spent 10 months in oak, 48% new. Baking spice, sweet vanilla and baked apple aromas abound. It envelops the palate with a medium-full bodied, creamy-smooth surge of spiced Granny Smith apple, lemon curd and notions of crème brûlée. It’s balanced on a pin with fruit-forward flavours with lots of adornments and lingering, lip-smacking finish. Pour with chicken Kiev or roast pork tenderloin with apple sauce. (Vic Harradine)

Lake Sonoma Pinot Noir 2016
Sonoma Coast $29.95 14.4% alcohol
Don’t let the pale-ruby hue mislead you, there’s lots to love in this new-world pinot. There’s a fresh nose of cherry, raspberry compote, red plum, fresh rose and a bit of cedar aromas. It’s silky textured on the palate with flavours of cherry pie filling, dry cranberry, dry sage and a light peppery note. It flows elegantly with soft tannin and well-merged alcohol. This estate-grown cab will please the most diverse crowd. It has aromas of raspberry, black cherry, smoke and vanilla. Mellow tannin and medium-plus acidity play together to support delicious flavours of ripe blackberry, cassis, roasted almond and a nice lift of black peppercorn persisting in the fruit-forward, dry finish. Stags’ Leap Chardonnay Napa Valley 2017
Napa Valley $39.95 (655381) 14.2% alcohol
This well-crafted, crisp chardonnay matured six months on lees in a mix of 25% new and 75% seasoned French oak with no malolactic conversion. The nose is elegant with citrus aromas combined with white flower, peach and a subtle vanilla note. It’s bright and fresh on the palate with a medley of pear, peach and grapefruit flavours complemented with vanilla, nutmeg and a delicious slate-minerality trailing in the long spiced finish. Medium-bodied with excellent alcohol integration, this is a winning choice when paired with moules et frites. (Louise Boutin)

Stags’ Leap Merlot Napa Valley 2016

This is merlot of high quality that’s assisted with a splash of petite sirah, malbec and petit verdot. It bursts with aromas of strawberry jam, black cherry, pepper and baking spice. Sixteen months in French oak barrel, 35% new, brings softness and complexity to this medium-bodied beauty. Expect flavours of ripe dark cherry, dry strawberry, clove, cinnamon and burnt sugar balanced with perfect acidity and a lovely, long, dry, fruity, warm and peppery finish. Pop the cork now to 2021 and serve with cherry-glazed magret de canard. (Louise Boutin)

Conundrum White 2016
California $21.95 (694653) 13.2%
The exact blend in this fun and refreshing wine is a closely held secret, but winemaker, Jon Bolta, claims that each vintage contains, at least, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, semillon and muscat canelli. The nose is dominated by aromas of lychee and peach and underpinned with a layer of minerality. It’s medium bodied on the palate with juicy flavours of apple and orange. It’s a great summer sipper. Daou Vineyards ‘Soul of a Lion’ 2016
Paso Robles $199.95 (546267) 14.7% alcohol
This absolute stunner of a red is a blend of mostly cabernet sauvignon, with smaller quantities of cabernet franc and petit verdot. The nose is a harmony of vanilla, coffee and fresh mint aromas. It’s full bodied and shows a perfect blending of vanilla, mocha, and sage, palate flavours. There’s also spot on acidity and tannins that are firm, but very approachable. The finish is long and graceful. This is drinking very nicely now, but really deserves a place of honour in your cellar for the next decade at least. Aerate/decant a couple of hours before serving. This pleasant pinot gris has a floral nose that is punctuated with aromas of nectar and orange peel. It’s medium-full bodied on the palate with a good level of acidity that balances flavours of green apple, pear and lemon. The finish is long with a citrus zing. This is well paired with a serving of pork chow mein. (Dave Isaacs)

Cline ‘Ancient Vines’ Zinfandel 2016
Contra Costa County $24.95 (719211) 15.0% alcohol
Sourced from vines dating back to the early 1900s, this medium-full bodied zin is a crowd pleaser—bright fruit aromas and flavours, perfectly integrated alcohol, mellow tannin and great acidity. It opens with ripe cherry, blackberry, baking spice and vanilla both on the nose and palate with a lovely spiced-fruit, medium-long finish. VQA Niagara Escarpment $19.95 (38117) 8.5% alcohol
Aromas of mandarin orange, honey-drizzled pit fruit and whiffs of fresh ginger abound on the nose of this flavourful, value-packed, iconic riesling that was sourced from some of the oldest riesling vines in Ontario. A bracing wash of tangy lime cordial and lemon curd bathe the palate persisting through the very lengthy, mouth-watering finish and aftertaste. It’s medium-bodied with good texture and pours well with baked ham dotted with cloves or spaetzle with grilled or pan-fried bratwurst. (Vic Harradine)

Hawke’s Bay $17.95 (650325) 13.0% alcohol
A wonderful rosé to raise in a toast to spring, this is a blend of 93% merlot with the balance malbec. It has a salmon-pink and peach-hue colour, with a nose of strawberry and clover aromas. This is medium-full bodied with a slightly off-dry sensation and nice crisp level of acidity. There are flavours of strawberry throughout, and a slight touch of gentle tannins on the finish. Enjoy with a baby spinach and strawberry salad drizzled with balsamic vinegar. (Dave Isaacs)

A portion of this elegant and easy-drinking pinot noir has been aged in French oak barrels, 10% new. This has resulted in a complex nose with aromas of musty wood, dried red fruit, fresh cherries and spice. Featherstone Sauvignon Blanc 2018

This exceptional-value gem was 50% barrel fermented and 50% stainless steel fermented then racked off its lees before the last fining. Aromas of floral notes, kiwi fruit and yellow peach aromas waft easily from this creamy-smooth, medium-bodied sauvignon blanc. It envelops the palate with a flavourful stream of Key lime, nectarine and lemongrass notes. There are no rough edges as it finishes smooth, dry, crisp and refreshing. • A ‘Phoenix’ is a mythical bird associated with rebirth or renewal. In the particularly brutal winter of 2017, Featherstone’s then 14-year-old gewürztraminer vines appeared to have succumbed to the cold.
