Mini-Feature: German Wine

• There are two classifications of ‘quality’ in German wine. The lower quality is now called - Qualitätswein, the higher – Prädikatswein.
• The lower classification was formerly known as—Qualitätswein bestimmter Anbaugebiete or simply, QbA. It’s now known as, Qualitätswein. These are simple easy-drinking, usually inexpensive wines sourced from less-ripe fruit to which it’s legal to add sugar, usually done to boost the alcohol level. There are also exceptions with good quality wine produced in this class. The higher quality classification was formerly known as Qualitätswein mit Prädikat or simply, QmP. It’s now known as Prädikatswein to which no sugar may be added and there are regulations in place to make certain grapes are virtually fully ripened at harvest. In such a cool climate, ripe grapes are prized. All Prädikatswein wines are also graded according to sugar level in the unfermented grape—in Germany measured on a hydrometer scale in degrees Oechsle at harvest – going from less sweet to sweetest, those levels are Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, Beerenauslese/Ice Wine, Trockenbeerenauslese.
