• The following wine has been certified, ‘Gran Selezione’. This is a relatively recent designation for Chianti Classico reds. e.g., ‘Gran Selezione is a new classification above Riserva, made using grapes harvested only from estate vineyards, with upgraded requirements for alcohol (minimum 13%), extract (26 g/l), and aging (30 months in barrel and/or bottle).’ It’s estimated less than 10% of Chianti Classico wines meet these standards.

• I suppose one must be a serious oenophile and/or avid white-wine lover to be interested in the following wine, given its relative obscurity and price. However, it’s certainly worth a purchase. The major grape in this tiny DOC, situated on the southern shores of Lake Garda, is the local variety, Turbiana, aka Trebbiano di Lugana. Wine labeled, DOC Lugana, must be at least 90% Turbiana fruit. Lugana is on the border of Lombardia and Veneto. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a visit and is less than an hour from Verona. The ‘Riserva’ wines are considered to be age worthy - some ten years or more. This was 70% barrel fermented, the balance in stainless steel, followed by 6 months in oak barrel and a further 12 months in bottle before release.

Replays on the lingering aftertaste are enhanced by white nectarine and lemon-lime yoghurt. Pour with grilled seafood or roast chicken. (Vic Harradine)
