Inniskillin ‘Legacy’ Pinot Gris 2009
VQA Niagara Peninsula $34.95 14.0% alcohol
Alluring and intensely fragrant, this wine flaunts its weight as you pour. There’s an alchemy here—optimal ripening conditions, some grapes harvested earlier, others later, some steel fermented, others aged in barrel—that produced a suave, creamy wine. Oh, yes… this is Pinot Gris! Intense aromas and fragrances of tropical, honeyed stone fruit entice. On the palate there’s a ripe, smooth texture and rich fruitiness balanced with tangy acidity and warm satisfying finish displaying nuances of lightly toasted nuts and vanilla. Absolutely wonderful, it lingers on. Only 130 cases were produced and it’s available only at Inniskillin Winery. (Susan Desjardins)

Stratus – Their winemaker, J-L Groulx, is a master of assemblage—blending wines to bring out not only the best in each, but coaxing synergy from them. Stratus was the world's first winery to earn LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Canada certification; think of LEED certification as much tougher than simply ‘organic’ as it includes the buildings as well as the land. As a winery, they’ve taken sustainability and resources invested in design, equipment, technology and winemaking techniques to Stratus-pheric heights. The results are impressive—quality wine in each price bracket.
