Château Montcontour ‘Jovly’ Cabernet Franc 2011
AOC Chinon, France $14.05 (300665) 13.0% alcohol
Heady aromas of black plum, espresso roast and dark cherry abound. It’s light-mid weight, with a persistent river of tang-laden red currant, piquant spice and savory herbs replaying on the crisp, dry finish and aftertaste. Pour with spicy gourmet sausage, meat-laden pizza or grilled and fully dressed burgers. (Vic Harradine)
Ironstone ‘Obsession’ Symphony 2012
California $15.95 (295931) 12.0 % alcohol
If you’ve not tried this, you must. Sexy aromas of rosewater, tropical fruit and musk spring from this gem of a wine. The Symphony grape was bred in 1981 by Dr. Olmo of UC Davis in California; Ironstone handles it beautifully. Flavours of spice, sweet tropical fruit and ripe nectarine abound. It’s balanced with a long mouth-watering finish. This sips beautifully on its own and matches spicy Asian cuisine with ease. (Vic Harradine)

An even split of Malbec and Tempranillo, this jumps from the glass with lifted aromas of campfire smoke, camphor and roasted herbs. Ripe juicy cherry and black currant bathe the palate garnished with cassis and superb tang. It’s mid-full weight with good mouth feel and a complex, lengthy aftertaste showcasing ripe mulberry, mocha and black plum. Great with grilled steak, burgers or gourmet sausage—don’t miss out on this gem. (Vic Harradine)
