The following wines, and Villard’s wines from the previous newsletter, were tasted with François Villard and his agent Frederic Brouca at a spirited Canadian and Latin American Wines (CLAWS) tasting in Ontario. These wines were also sampled with food and to say they were food-friendly would be an understatement.

Domaine François Villard Condrieu 2008

AOC Condrieu, Rhône Valley $90.00 13.5% alcohol
Perfumed and powerful aromas curl from the glass of this gorgeously textured gem—floral, honeyed tree fruit and apricot. The mouth feel is plush and flavourful with well-balanced powerful flavours of citrus, lychee and Mirabelle plum. The monumental finish layers on minerality, wisps of new oak and hints of melon. From an über premium site, this more than lives up to its breeding. Order by the case of six via Private Order from Hexagon Wines by e-mail \n This email address is being protected from spambots. Domaine François Villard ‘Appel des Serienes’ 2008

Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes, Rhône Valley $25.00 12.2% alcohol
Lifted pungent aromas of savoury spice and dark crushed berry fruit waft freely from this tangy uncomplicated red. It’s mid weight, nicely textured delivering a persistent stream of nervy racy flavour—cranberry, pomegranate and pie cherry mingling with perceptible tannin and loads of spice. Waiting a few months and pouring alongside a meat-laden pizza would ratchet the rating up a notch or two. Domaine François Villard ‘Mairlant’ 2007

AOC Saint Joseph, Rhône Valley $45.00 12.8% alcohol
Alluring aromas of spice, red cherry and vanilla segue a rich and refined wash of palate-pleasing flavour—black currant, Montmorency cherry and spiced black Damson plum—framed by moderating acidity and underpinned by ripe supple tannin. This is medium in body and texture with a lingering lip-smacking finish redolent of cherry and red currant.
