Cinnamon and nutmeg on the nose, this uses broad brush strokes of delicious apple, ripe, juicy pear and zesty lemon citrus to coat the palate. Mid weight, with good mouth feel and terrific balance, it finishes in a blaze of fruit flavour, good moderating acidity and oodles of charm. The price-quality balance tips in your favour and it’s the perfect size for two sharing small plates for lunch. Perfumed aromas—floral notes, toast and spiced orchard fruit—widen on the palate with a wash of balanced flavour—ripe, succulent nectarine, pineapple and quince jelly to the fore. Peachy Canyon ‘Westside’ Zinfandel 2008

This is a rip-roaring Zin with rich, concentrated flavours beautifully tempered with moderating acidity and a supple tannin frame—Zin-lovers will lap this up. Robust and rarin’ to go, it bursts on the palate with concentrated, juicy flavours of kirsch liqueur, black berry jam and espresso roast. Francis Coppola ‘Diamond Collection Red Label’ Zinfandel 2009

An appealing well-made wine, this Zin offers lifted aromas of ripe black fruit, licorice, spice and pepper. Dry, full bodied, suave and velvety, the combination of polished tannins, fine acidity and focused dark spicy fruit invites another sip. Enjoy it with your favourite grilled meats. Ravenswood ‘Old Vine’ Zinfandel 2009

This is balanced and beautiful with good structure and oodles of charm without losing that fruit-forward essence of Zinfandel. Rich and ripe, dark berry flavours meld with mocha and briary berry on the palate and lengthy aftertaste. It’s fully flavoured and nicely balanced with ripe supple tannin and moderating acidity completing the package. Worth every penny; splurge and pick up a couple. (Vic Harradine)

Storybook Mountain ‘Mayacamas Range Napa Estate’ Zinfandel 2009
Napa Valley $46.95 (682989) 14.9% alcohol
Lifted and perfumed aromas of savoury herbs and spice, black plum and mixed field berry fruit abound on the nose of this mid-weight, tangy red. It showers the palate with zesty, lip-smacking red currant, ripe pomegranate and tangy sour cherry. It finishes in a mouth-watering blaze of red cherry and nuances of blueberry. Expressive on the nose—Asian spice, charred toast and cola—it sings on the palate with a balanced, beautifully textured wash of red currant and Montmorency cherry interlaced with ripe, dark berry fruit. If your desire is to inspire and captivate, then this elderflower liqueur was crafted for you! First up, the bottle’s in an Art Deco style. Then there’s the process required to transform these ephemeral spring flowers into this exotic liqueur. Open, pour, and the aromas fairly leap from the glass—stone fruit, honeyed melon, expressive white floral notes and a hint of anise. It’s decadent, richly textured with aromas replaying on the palate augmented with a whiff of tinned apricots. All that rich flavour and texture is lovingly balanced with fine acidity. One of the wine-world’s best kept secrets are the aged—sometimes ancient—fortified Muscat and Tokay from Australia, particularly the Rutherglen region in Victoria where a portion of this was sourced. Involved aromas of malt, spice cake, dark raisin and mocha pave the way for a river of palate-coating, mind-numbing flavours of orange peel marmalade, ripe fig, spun sugar and toffee. Pale-salmon hued, this is absolutely delightful—a medium-bodied sparkler that’s fruity and dry. From subtle aromas of summer berries, spice and brioche through to the delicate creamy mousse that refreshes the palate, it offers light red berry flavours and a lengthy mouth-watering finish. This is a step up from most Argentina Malbec and what one hopes for at this price. It delivers a structured, complex array of aromas—gamy notes, dark berry fruit and a streak of minerality. There’s a textured wave of flavour with chalky, dark cherry, bittersweet chocolate and briary berry to the fore. Mid-full weight and brimming with charm, the finish is balanced and fruity. Gun flint, slate and orchard fruit aromas precede a lively river of lemon zest, white grapefruit and succulent white nectarine. It’s medium bodied with good mouth feel and loads of citrus flavour on the crisp, refreshing finish. Paired and poured well with white pizza adorned with arugula in garlic and oil vinaigrette. From another producer of reliably good product comes this inky-purple red offering appealing aromas of spicy, rich, dark fruit, cedar and toasty vanilla. Dry, medium bodied and fresh, this is an approachable Carmenère offering a rush of bright berry fruit, a replay of spice and vanilla, hints of pepper and a notion of underbrush. Ripe tannin and fresh acidity create the desired balance, the full fruity finish garnished with notes of charry toast. Bring on the steak or cellar medium term. (Susan Desjardins)

Cherry, cedar and earthy notes dominate the nose on this chewy, cellar dweller—pop the cork 2016-2022. Ripe black currant and juicy Bing cherry flavours interlace with mixed spice, racy cranberry and red currant on the palate. It shifts into high gear on the aftertaste with cassis and and kirsch liqueur peeking through. Careful cellaring—cool, dark etc.—should be handsomely rewarded. (Vic Harradine)

Lightly hued in the glass, look for quiet aromas of spice and watermelon as a harbinger of this light-on-its-feet Rosé. Vibrant aromas of ruby red grapefruit and cherry provide segue to a fairly balanced wash of tangy, racy flavour—sour cherry, red currant and riper dark berry fruit. It’s medium bodied with nice texture and lengthy crisp and refreshing aftertaste. Pours well on its own as an aperitif with the oomph to pair nicely with a deli board platter or bruschetta. Germany: White Wine

Geil Bechtheimer Rosengarten Riesling Kabinett 2011
Prädikatswein, Rheinhessen $14.95 (994764) 10.0% alcohol
There’s very good value in this off-dry, mouth-watering Riesling and you won’t go wrong pairing it with a spicy Asian dish like Singapore noodle curry shrimp. Orchard fruit, key lime and mineral aromas hook up with a river of flavour—off-dry, lip-smacking crisp, green apple, ripe, yellow peach and apricot preserve. It’s light-medium bodied with good mouth feel and a sweet and tang lingering aftertaste. Dare I say… yummy? (Vic Harradine)

Portugal: Rosé Wine

Vinho Regional Alentejano $14.95 (117077) 13.5% alcohol
Herbs and spice, currants and watermelon on the nose, this washes over the palate with tangy red currant, juicy ripe cranberry and red raspberry flavour. Light-medium bodied with a mid-length aftertaste, there’s enough oomph and structure to pour alongside Greek salad lightly dressed with verjus. (Vic Harradine)

Priorat is a go to region for interesting, complex reds—need more from there and Spain, in general. Fresh and fruity with spice and currant aromas, this has depth and concentrated flavours with sweet, ripe mulberry and ripe, juicy black cherry wreathed in kitchen spice and wild herbs. It’s mid weight with a highly textured, lingering, fruit-laden finish. (Vic Harradine)

Heredad de Baroja ‘Gran Reserva’ 2001
DOCa Rioja $21.95 (276113) 13.5% alcohol
From a seriously good producer and fabulous vintage, take a hard look at this—it’s complex, structured and charming with lots of life ahead. Leather, spice and dried currant entwine with earthy and cedar notes on the involved nose. Dry and balanced throughout, there’s no shortage of fruit with dark Bing cherry and black berry washing over the palate in waves interlaced with espresso roast and earthy notes underpinned by perceptible tannin. Juan Gil ‘White Label de Cepas Viejas’ Monastrell 2010
DO Jumilla $12.95 (013656) 14.5% alcohol
This Monastrell a.k.a. Mourvèdre, is fruit-filled and brimming with flavour, you’ll have to be quick as it won’t be on shelves long. Opening with a lifted nose of mixed field berry and lively spice notes, it coats the palate with sweet, ripe mulberry, juicy, black Bing cherry and black berry jam. Medium weight and showcasing oodles of texture, the fruit-laden flavour persists through the lengthy aftertaste. (Vic Harradine)
