Delaforce Vintage Port 2000

DOP Douro $58.95 (344861) 21.0% alcohol

This Vintage Port has definitely hit its stride with delightful aromas of raisin, molasses and smoked Beemster cheese. It’s full bodied and thick with its sweetness offset by a good balance of acid and nicely integrated tannins. Flavours of caramel and butterscotch linger in the finish. This is drinking wonderfully right now and will keep doing so for at least another eight years. Raise a glass along with your fruit cake after your holiday dinner. (Dave Isaacs)

De Bortoli ‘Noble One’ Botrytis Semillon 2016

New South Wales, Australia $29.95 375ml (917252) 10.5% alcohol

This family of European immigrants made Australia their home 90 years ago and have been making wine ever since. This noble rot semillon has become the reference in Australian dessert wine for over three decades. Aged 12 months in French oak barriques, it displays complex aromas —apricot, honey, vanilla and saffron. This seductive potion coats the palate with delicious candied stone fruit, marmalade and almond paste flavours trailing in the long tangy-sweet finish. This can cellar for 15-20 years but is delicious now with pan-seared foie gras or fine cheeses, dry apricots and roasted nuts. (Louise Boutin)

It’s refreshing with a hint of sweetness that lingers on the finish. This is bound to be a crowd-pleaser. (Susan Desjardins)

Karlo Estate VanAlstine Red 2017
Product of Canada, Property Grown $29.00 500 mL 17.5% alcohol
A Port-style wine from Prince Edward County? Yes. And it’s wonderful! This wine does not yet have a VQA designation—the Frontenac Noir grapes grown in Karlo Estate’s own vineyards, from which this is made, are not officially recognized. However, that does not lessen the value or quality of this wine. It’s dark black cherry in colour and noses with aromas of cherry, vanilla and prunes. It’s full bodied and sweet on the palate with flavours of strawberry, dried cherry and raisin. The finish is lingering and decadent. Pair this with an equally decadent chocolate cherry soufflé. Made from 100% Pinot Noir, this was vinified saignée—using only red grapes, not red wine mixed with white as is often done in Champagne—capturing tantalizing spice, red licorice and berry fruit aromas and an alluring salmon-pink colour. It attacks the palate with mid weight, generous texture and a groundswell of flavour with black currant, strawberry and spiced Damson plum to the fore.
