Drappier ‘Nature – Pinot Noir – Zero Dosage’ Brut Non-Vintage
AOC Champagne $57.95 (179275) 12.5% alcohol
Pleasant aromas of floral notes, apple and baking brioche precede frothy mousse of fine-bead bubbles winding their way to the top of the glass. It’s lively and fresh on the palate with flavours of bracing, tang-laden citrus and pleasant minerality interlaced with notions of honeyed pit fruit. This is 100% pinot noir, hand-harvested, undergoing natural malolactic conversion before spending a minimum of 30 months in bottle on its lees before disgorgement and no sugar was added. The bottle these tasting notes and rating are based on was disgorged November 2018. (Vic Harradine)

Labouré-Gontard ‘Brut’ Crémant de Bourgogne Non-Vintage

AOC Burgundy $21.95 (401018) 12.0% alcohol

This blend of chardonnay/pinot noir is made in the ‘traditional method’ thus mirroring Champagne in grape varieties and how it’s produced; it’s also made from grapes grown just south of Champagne. However, it doesn’t mirror Champagne’s price and that makes it interesting. It’s rich, fruity with generous mousse—lots of bubbles—satin-smooth mouth feel and divine aftertaste. A perfect wine to welcome guests, this has the character and depth to match well with appetizers and lighter fare—pick up a few. (Vic Harradine)

88drink now
Carpenè Malvolti ‘Cuvée Brut - Conegliano Valdobbiadene’ Prosecco Superiore Non-Vintage

DOCG Veneto $18.95 (727438) 11.0% alcohol

This is brimming with a solid line of orchard fruit on the nose and palate with aromas of apple and pear joined by flavours of white peach and notions of lemon drop—dry, crisp and refreshing. It’s light on its feet with an affinity for lighter-styled dishes like chicken or seafood canapés or sipped on its own before dinner. (Vic Harradine)

Henry of Pelham ‘Speck Family Reserve’ Chardonnay 2017
VQA Short Hills Bench $29.95 (616466) 13.3% alcohol
This is special, with high quality at a low price delivered in spades. A dazzling nose of smoke, spice, vanilla, fresh pear and apple aromas provides segue for a medium-full bodied, gorgeously balanced wash of lemony tang, baking spice and honey-drizzled green apple. This has depth, character and plenty of pizzazz. The oak in this barrel-fermented chardonnay has been deftly integrated and adds to the character and delectable flavours. Pour with roast fowl and all the fixings, now to 2024 and possibly a bit beyond. (Vic Harradine)

A river of beautifully balanced, just-off-dry ambrosia envelops the palate with delicious flavours of ripe red cherry, sparsely sugared strawberry and the icing on the cake… a lip-smacking dollop of ripe pink grapefruit. Sublime sipped on its own, it also pairs well alongside white, three-cheese pizza, baked round of brie with a scant topping of red currant jelly, or just about any lighter-styled appetizer. (Vic Harradine)

This riesling is intriguing, to say the least. Look for aromas of lactic notes, fresh pear, apricot, lime and minerality. The plot thickens on the palate with round mouthfeel offering flavours of ripe peach, green apple, lime zest and a delicious chalky minerality with hardly any sign of residual sugar despite 18g of it per litre. This well-crafted white is medium-bodied, extremely versatile at the table. Exquisite and delicious on its own, it’s also a great match with onion tart. (Louise Boutin)
