• The following 2020 Speck Brothers ‘Family Tree – The Bootlegger’ Baco Noir was sustainably grown and 20% barrel aged in American oak and 80% in stainless steel tanks. During Prohibition—arguably between 1916 and 1927 in Ontario—light airplanes would land by estate vineyards to pick up wine and spirits that had been produced in nearby barns.

There’s considerable fruit aromas on the nose—dark cherry and black plum—decorated with savoury herbs and hints of wood smoke. It pleases the palate with a sweet-tinged wash of kirsch liqueur and cassis. This is medium-bodied with good mouthfeel, decent balance and persistent purity of fruit and flavour from entry to finish and aftertaste. This shines when served with pulled pork or smoked and grilled back ribs slathered with spicy barbecue sauce. (Vic Harradine)
