Buena Vista ‘The Legendary Badge’ Petite Sirah 2016
California $17.95 (545772) 14.5% alcohol
This deep-purple hued, proprietary red blend—predominantly petite sirah and cabernet sauvignon—delivers a pleasing, ripe, fruity, spicy nose with blackberry, black plum compote, kirsch liqueur and spice. A wash of juicy black fruit floods the palate along with dark chocolate on the fruit-forward finish with chalky tannins adding structure. Just below off-dry on the sweetness scale, it’s full-bodied and will please the most discriminating in your barbecue-party crowd. (Louise Boutin)

Fancy Farm Girl ‘Flamboyant Red’ 2013
VQA Niagara Peninsula $14.95 (394080) 12.5% alcohol
This Bordeaux blend—45% cabernet sauvignon, 40% cabernet franc, 15% merlot—matured in French and American oak for six months. It displays a rich bouquet—black cherry, raspberry, green pepper, cedar and sweet smoke. The palate replays black cherry in a sweet, candied version along with tart raspberry and ripe blackberry leading to a chalky/mineral finish. It’s ready to drink now and pairs well with roast turkey and cranberry jelly. (Louise Boutin).
