Colognole Chianti Rufina 2004
DOCG Chianti Rufina $20.45 (974501)
Lower yields, elevated vineyards and a longer ripening season coalesce in this fine wine. Cherry, mineral and earthy notes waft from the glass while the fruit forward flavours include currant, cassis, and notes of licorice and truffles. This is medium bodied, well balanced with a medium length finish. There's good value here and is paired well with veal scaloppini. Cologne Reserva Del Don 2003
DOCG Chianti Rufina $33.15
Look for finesse and elegance not always found from this grape (100% Sangiovese) or at this price. A family-owned family-run winery, they're passionate and particular. Almost opaque in density of colour, the lifted nose offers red cherry and spice box aromas then gets into high gear with a surge of ripe fruit flavours—currant, pomegranate and black briary berry. Well balanced with a supple texture, the lingering finish is dry and fruity. Order direct from Rob Elvy of Small Winemakers Collection at 613.530.0575. (VH)

Akarua Winery Chardonnay 2006
Central Otago, South Island, New Zealand $24.95
Located in the world's southernmost wine region, you'd expect something pretty flavourful - and you'll get it with this. Smoke and oak on the nose, the nuttiness and plush texture is reflected on the palate as the flavours are all about citrus, green apple and ripe white peach. It's nicely balanced, medium bodied and sports a clean and refreshing finish. It's Chablis-like enough to make a lovely pairing with freshly shucked briny oysters.
